We had a wonderful and powerful gathering watching the movie Penelope together this past week.
Penelope is a 2006 British-American romantic fantasy comedy film about a girl born into a wealthy family with a nose of a pig due to a family curse. To free herself, she must be loved by another also from a royal and upper class lineage who will marry her despite her facial features. Her mother with the help of a matchmaker introduces Penelope to a parade of eligible suitors who promptly flee in terror and disgust upon seeing her face.

One of the main themes that the movie beautifully depicts is how what we often want for ourselves (or our loved ones) is not what we/they actually need. In fact, Penelope and the other characters help us discover that what we need is already within us and cannot be denied to us – no matter who or what seems to block our way. The journey of Self-discovery is truly one of self-empowerment.
Below is a three-part commentary I shared about the movie:
- Penelope commentary part one (17 min)
- Penelope commentary part two (28 min)
- Penelope commentary part three (8 min)
I hope this movie helps you along your path of healing.
Happy movie watching!
