Many of you might be familiar with the 2018 Mary Magdalene movie. I have fallen in love with this movie!
I felt inspired to highlight two different scenes – one in which Jesus, and the second in which Mary Magdalene- help their beloved friends heal through anger. In each situation, the friend is angry at some injustice happening in the world. The friend feels very justified in their anger, and this could be any one of us feeling angry at some injustice we perceive in the world.
Jesus and Mary Magdalene are wise teachers of peace and healing. But they never question why their friends are angry. They do not get lost in the story or the circumstances surrounding the anger. Rather, they simply help their friends go inward, asking them how they feel.
How does it feel to carry that anger in your heart? Does it lessen as the months go by?
The Buddha said that anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.
The teachings of A Course in Miracles never tell us that we should not get angry yet we do learn that anger is never justified. Never. This might be bitter pill to swallow- especially by those of us who feel very upset at injustice, inequity, or something that just does not seem fair.
Yet we are not asked to deny our feelings, stuff our emotions, or do a spiritual bypass. Rather, we are asked by the Beloved within to allow our interpretations of events that trigger anger within us to be transformed.
Often, our anger is built on a series of false premises that we assume are correct. Yet the Beloved can offer us another way to see the same situation that will leave us feeling peaceful and happy. The choice is always ours.
