“No amount of self-improvement can make up for any lack of self-acceptance.”
-Robert Holden
Robert Holden PhD has done amazing work in the fields of psychology and spirituality. He is one of my favorite teachers and and this quote is one of my favorite quotes.
In this talk we had a wonderful discussion about this quote in the context of educational systems that emphasize grades and other external markers of success over a value for taking one’s time, paying attention to the process and ‘enjoying the journey.’
Often even as adults we feel that our happiness and acceptance depends on some external aspect changing.
When this happens, then I can feel happy.
When that happens, then I will know that I am worthy.
When this happens, then ‘they’ will know I am successful.
And so on and so forth.
Yet no matter where we seem to arrive or the more we try to ‘improve’ ourselves or a situation, the more there seems to be to improve and change!
What if we started with a premise of self-acceptance- that we are doing the best we can with the awareness and tools we have right now?
That we are open to learn new ways and new ideas but we need not judge ourselves or others for what or where we find ourselves.
Would that not be a more happy place to live life from?
Would that not grow our hearts along with our minds?
Yet if we can find the sweet spot of self-acceptance first and help others do the same, we find we become happier, more motivated and creative. New change and innovation does happen but it comes from a place of love, joy and greater ease.
Take a listen below and receive a healthy dose of self-acceptance to heal your mind and your heart!
