In my last two posts I shared how I have felt captivated by this book about Mary Magdalene.
For me, this book brings forth a new way to understand Mary Magdalene and her relationship to Jesus as well as her teachings. Meggan Watterson shares that Mary’s Gospel, along with the Gospel of Thomas and Gospel of Philip, are part of a Christianity which emphasizes the importance of remembering the Christ within, that Jesus wasn’t to be idolized but rather seen like a loving, elder guide who can show us how we all can walk this path of inner transformation- where we transcend the ego mind and fully realize our innate divine perfection.
In this book, Meggan touchingly weaves her personal journey as a single mother, a survivor of sexual trauma and her devotion and dedication to studying the Gospel of Mary for most of her life. She also shows from Mary’s Gospel how we might get stuck in the ego layers that prevent us from discovering and acting from our true identity of love.
Megan expresses beautifully her experience of finding the Gospel of Mary:
“For me, finding Mary Magdalene’s voice, her gospel, was like finally attending that church I had imagined church would be like as a little girl, a place where we’re not trying to be better than anyone else, or be better than who we are in the moment. Everyone, no matter who we are, and everything, is included, especially the body.”
Ever since I have read this book, I feel that I can see Jesus and Mary Magdalene as a couple that loved each other deeply, lived a life of ministry and service, and that their love continued beyond death. Not in a romantic sense. Rather, that the eternal Christ (or soul or spirit) lives on even after physical death. That we are in essence this spirit, this soul, this Christ, even in what may appear to be the messiness of life. This book gives me even more confirmation that we can allow the egoic veils of ignorance to be lifted so we may perhaps have glimpses of this Christ vision even while alive in the body.
